A post and a page in WordPress can appear to be the same thing. However they are very different. Pages should be used when you want the content to remain the same on the website. Pages would be used for the website portion of the website. For instance if you want the same homepage every time someone visits your website, use a page. The posts are used for putting in new content in a dynamic fashion. In a blog, the newest content will always be put on top while the older content is pushed down the page. WordPress gives you the option of naming either posts or pages. You can also designate a tab in the navigation bar to display all of your recent posts. The default in WordPress will be to display your newest posts on the homepage. WordPress Thesis Theme and other WordPress Themes give you the option of being able to declare a tab in the navigation bar just for posts along with pages. Pretty cool. You can do that in Setting->Reading in the WordPress Dashboard. It gives you both website and blog functionality all in one website. The best of both worlds so to speak.
